The British success of The Killing, which picked up a Bafta this year for Best International Programme, has been attributed by many to Soren Malling's co-star, Sofie Grabol. Given the success of other Scandinavian authors such as Jo Nesbo of Norway and Sweden's Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell with his Inspector Wallander series, there seems to be an insatiable British appetite for Nordic crime drama. It rapidly attracted a faithful following – the final programme was watched by a bigger BBC4 audience than that for Mad Men – and now we have the current showings.
The BBC bought the programme shortly afterwards but decided to sit on it until this year when it was shown without much fanfare on BBC4.
It was first broadcast in Denmark five years ago. As Meyer, actor Soren Malling was one of the main characters in the 20-part series of The Killing and enjoyed the role.
